This week Royboy sits with Darryl Starbird in a back room of the Starbird Rod & Custom Show and talks some history. Then there’s a bit of news on the #48Cars48States trip to share with all of you.
Here’s your final day of coverage of the 2017 Starbird Rod & Custom Show/Rockin Billy Bash! I had a great time at the show and I hope you’ve gotten a taste of what the show is like from the coverage this week.
Corey Conyers of Crown Custom is the man responsible for the build of this beautiful dragster. He is too busy fabricating kool stuff to have time to build a website so instead if you click on the photo it will take you to his page on Facebook. His contact info is on that page. ANYTHING you need fabbed or metal shaped, this man can do. Click the image above to get his contact info!
48 Cars In 48 States : The Great American Road Trip – A 48 state road trip with a stop in each state to photograph a traditionally styled hot rod, kustom or drag vehicle. Daily updates will be posted here on royboyproductions.com so you can see where I’ve gone, who I’ve met, some of what I’ve seen. At the end of the trip I’ll produce a 200 page full color book of the entire adventure. Business Sponsorship Packages here available as well as you can pre-order the book here!
There was quite a display of VW’s in the Rockin Billy Bash, I’ve put them all here in the last section of the last post of the show.
In Part 4 of the Starbird Rod & Custom Show : The Next Generation I finish up with the upstairs section and slide down the ramps into the Rockin Billy Bash held in the lower area of the building. Enjoy the photos one more post coming tomorrow!

Before we go any further, let me take a second to tell you how much I love Bird’s Starliner pictured above. Wow, I’ve heard about it through mutual friends for awhile and seeing it in person was a treat. I’m always more of a kustom guy but I can certainly appreciate a straight black Starliner. That roofline is gorgeous, it’s one of those cars that the designers just got right in the first place.
Okay, back to the task at hand. I was able to get in the door just before opening so that’s why you won’t see many people in these early photos. And as often is the case, I got side tracked talking so some of the rod/kustom family and before I knew it, it was 11am. The show features all kinds of rides and but I can say right now, we need more kustoms at the show next year! I guess I’ll have to step up and put my car in since I’ve said that, who wants to come hang out in Tulsa with me next year?

Since 2009 I’ve been attending the Starbird Rod & Custom show in Tulsa, OK. This year was the 53rd annual event and the 2nd dubbed “The Next Generation” as the show is now run by the next generation of the Starbird family. I talked to Darryl Starbird on Saturday and he was happy to say that for the first time ever he was attending the show as a spectator, not a promotor, not chopping a car, just as a car guy. He seemed in good spirits because the show is in good hands. There will be photos coming all week, so keep checking back!

Here’s the final post of my 2017 trip to the Kool Kustom Kar Show in Pueblo, CO. Some way kool stuff at this show!

The 2017 Kool Kustom Kar Show was a nice mixture of hot rods, kustoms, cruisers, muscle cars, restorations and some drag vehicles. I’d love to see the Kustom Corner grow next year, maybe I’ll have to take one of my rides out to the show.

The Kool Kustom Kar Show is the kind of indoor show that I hope we can see more of. A small show packed wall to wall with cars. I get the big indoor shows that have wrestlers and tv stars on hand to sign autographs and such but I don’t want to go to a car show for anything except cars and the folks that own them! That’s what this show is to me.

For Part 2 of the 2017 Kool Kustom Kar Show from Pueblo, CO I’m focusing on the Kustom Corner of the show. Dave and Chrissi Pareso brought 3 cars down and Dave invited a few of his friends to bring their kustoms. You already know this is my favorite part of the show, right? So much kool!

This weekend’s trip was a short 26 hours round trip up to Colorado. After driving up Friday night I met with a bunch of the Lonely Knights for breakfast in Colorado Springs then headed down to Pueblo for the Kool Kustom Kar Show at the fairgrounds.

Time for an update on the restoration of my camper Irene. When this whole thing started I thought I’d purchased a fairly solid old camper, I had no idea how deep the rotted wood went. That’s pretty much the case with most campers that have wood rot. As of the writing of this post there are only two panels left to replace then I can seal the wood, wrap it in insulation and then reinstall all of the exterior tin.
This week Royboy talks with Cody Walls from Traditional Metal Craft about his 59 Chevy Wagon, a 35 Chevy hot rod that he recently finished for the Grand National Roadster Show, and about going from a freelance fabricator to owning his own shop.
This week Royboy welcomes back artist and actor James Owens. After hanging out at the 2017 Grand National Roadster Show we sat down over Skype to discuss the show, the artistic process and more.
Welcome to the final day of my coverage of the 2017 Grand National Roadster show. Hopefully by now you’ve seen the captions that I added this time, adding in the names of the owners and the make/model of the cars if I can grab the info at the show. Let me know how you like this or dislike it, it’s a ton of extra work but if you dig it I’ll keep doing it. Also for those that subscribe to the site, how do you like getting the entire post in your email inbox?
In this coverage post I cover a few things, some more of the outdoor cars, building 9 featuring Tri-Fives, a display of some seriously awesome woodies, a rad blown drag VW, a couple of kustoms, hot rods, and the amazingly righteous unveiling of the Beast IV at the NHRA Museum. Congrats to Webb Automotive Art, and everyone involved on an insanely cool build. It was motivating to be in a room with so many of the people that inspire me on a regular basis.
I hope that you’ve enjoyed the coverage of the Grand National Roadster Show. If you like it, please share these posts with your car friends and make sure to thank Speedway Motors for making this coverage possible.
Saturday Morning we were back at it, exploring the NHRA Museum as we waited for the 2017 Grand National Roadster Show to open. If you’re a car nut, this is one of the cooler museums you could pass time in. Being from Kansas we especially paid attention to the section talking about the first ever NHRA Nationals in Great Bend, KS in 1955, the track is still there and still in operation. If you find yourself at the GNRS, the Father’s Day LA Roadster show or just in Pomona, CA with some time to kill doing something awesome, put the NHRA museum on your list of things to do.
Saturday there’s an addition to the cars that were in the show on Friday, in between the buildings are more hot rods, kustoms, gassers, lowriders, cruisers, and just about anything else cool that you can think of. Enjoy the photos of the “Drive In Car Show”
